Our second in our series of British Fashion Fundamentals showcases three casual British pieces that are ideal for Spring.

Despite Spring being imminent, remember we are still in the United Kingdom and will be susceptible to rain, hail, cloud, any type of weather imaginable to human consciousness and known science. Versatile pieces for Spring therefore are utterly essential as you'll look unprepared in shorts and flip flops when the rain comes.

These items have been chosen not only because they are made in the UK but because they offer understated, casual style and should be staples in any gentleman's wardrobe.

Here's our three top picks;

Hengrave Bomber Jacket - lavenhamjackets.com - £315

This outstanding bomber jacket from Suffolk firm Lavenham is an easy choice. Contemporary and very stylish, the Hengrave is everything you could want in a jacket for Spring. Great design, cleanly cut and with excellent choice of colour, the Hengrave can easily be thrown on over t-shirts when the sun vanishes and the clouds appear. An excellent choice of blue keeps the jacket understated whilst some red trim adds some nicely contrasting red. Aftershave of the Week - Ralph Lauren Polo Red

Many of you would have seen the advertising campaign for this fragrance last year, featuring polo player Nacho Figueras driving around, looking cool in a Lamborghini. The bottle design is flawless and just oozes style, the smell, unsurprisingly, is fitting of the red theme. The top notes of red grapefruit, cranberry and Italian lemon mix beautifully with the middle notes of saffron and lavender. The base notes of wood and hot amber complete the scent, it's an energising fragrance best for casual everyday wear.

Shoe Of The Day - Chatham Marine Orwell Desert Boot, Indigo

Colour is the key with these super relaxed boots and whilst they come in a variety of colours, Indigo for me is the stand out design, it's rich and offers that welcomed flash of colour on a Spring day. Five Gems For The Skrill Premier - Football Manager 2014

Life is so much harder managing an English non-league club in FM14, financially it could not be further from elite football yet the appeal of taking a club to league football and beyond will always be a draw to the FM aficionado.

Squad building is difficult work as you will be heavily relying on loans, freebies and cheap deals to bolster your ranks; there can be very few mistakes in the targeting and signing of players.

With twenty four teams competing for just one automatic promotion spot yet with four relegation places, the Skrill Premier is a tricky division full of fairly equal teams. Your tactical know-how is especially important in this league; you'll have fewer players with the ability to turn the game for you and team cohesion and squad mentality are crucial. Well drilled and organised set plays are vital.

Despite the limitations you'll have on your spending, there is some talent available to help you climb your way up the leagues; the challenge is enthralling and enjoyable. Here are five gems for the Conference Premier, all taken from the 14.3 update of the game.

Kevin Malaga - CB - Free Transfer

Strong French Centre Back Malaga is a must sign for a non-league club looking to progress. He has good heading and jumping stats and is also strong, providing a rock at the centre of your defence and a welcome threat from set-pieces. Recently released by Coventry at the start of the game he's one to sign quickly as he there will be League clubs looking to secure his services. Played as a Limited Defender (which most non league centre backs should be, bad pitches often mean to ball needs to be cleared first and passed second) he is an addition to build your club around.

A rock at the centre of any non-league defence.

Nathan Ellington - STC - Free Transfer

Should you decided to bring journey-man striker Ellington to your club it will be his 13th. 126 goals in 458 career appearances is commendable to say the least and Ellington offers a pricey yet assured option to lead your line and help develop your youth. At 32 he's still in his prime and if you can convince him to sign he has the experience and class for a quick promotion. He's no longer quick but used as a Target Man, Ellington will hold up the ball and look for younger legs to offload to as well as getting himself in the box. With Penalty Taking at '18' Ellington will not often miss those vital spot kicks. Perhaps a gamble but for a season he will make a solid addition.

Experience and a touch of class

Mark Randall - MC / AMC - Free Transfer

Recently released by League Two Chesterfield and a product of Arsenal's youth set-up, centre midfielder Randall is a must sign for a Conference team with ambition to step up in to League Two. Randall's most attractive quality is his passing at '18' which would be head and shoulders above most other players outside the non league divisions. Look to play him as a Deep Lying Playmaker and try to get his threading through balls and spraying long passes out wide.

Few players will have the passing ability of Randall outside League Football

Steve Howard - ST - Free Transfer

At 37 years year, superb Target Man Steve Howard is no spring chicken yet just take a look at those stats, super determination, bravery and heading all make former Leicester City, Derby and Luton Town player a look. Perfect for long ball, direct teams, Howard should be used as an attacking battering ram for headed flick ons, hold up play and as a focal point of any set piece. Few players will offer such devastating heading and raw power. Pair with a pacey young striker to feed off the balls in the air Howard is sure to win.

A human battering ram, Howard should be the focus of any direct team.

 Al Bangura - DMC - £80k - Forest Green

If you are lucky enough to be given some spending money at the start of your game I would strongly advise you to invest in Al Bangura, Forest Green's defensive midfielder. Valued at £80k I've seen him go for far less and would suggest you could pick him up for half that amount. Once highly rated for Watford and with a senior cap for Sierra Leon, Bangura is still only 25 years old; if you can capture some of that talent he can be an exceptionally useful Ball Winning Midfielder or Defensive Midfielder shielding a back four. With impressive determination, '18' and bravery '15' Bangura will do the running and seize on loose balls before they can threaten your defence. His passing isn't great however so consider having a Deep Lying Playmaker to pick the ball off him once the ball has been won.

A solid shield to your defence.

Shoe of the Day - John White's Emerson Brown Calf

John White makes the Shoe of the Day twice in a week, this time the more formal Emerson Brown Calf. In terms of a polished smart shoe, you won't go wrong with these. The rich, shined brown is a real treat, making the Emerson easily smart enough for the office. What catches the eye however is the intelligently mixed punched and stitched composition, subtle yet very well defined, nicely spaced and sits well against the leather. A very nice example of contrasting texture and detail blending expertly together to combine something quite special. Available from  johnwhiteshoes.com - £110

Shoe of the Day - Kurt Geiger's Graham

Kurt Geiger's London range features some top, razor-sharp footwear which is no less than you might expect from a firm renowned for sharp style. The finely named Graham does not disappoint and holds it's own with ease against some much more costly rivals. This superb pair of Wingtip Derby Brogues has some creative and well defined curved stitching and I love the blended tan colour, a true contemporary design. I'd be inclined to pair these with some good, dark denim. Available at kurtgeiger.com and priced at £160.

British Fashion Fundamentals - The Belt

The belt is a subtle expression of class and taste and is worthy of our first pick in a series of British fundamental fashion items every well dressed man should own. I for one feel rather odd stepping out without a good belt; it should inspire confidence as much as good shoes.

It is no surprise that there are an abundance of Brit belts to choose from, Let us provide a few options, each picked for their style, quality and substance.

South Molton Leather Belt - Heistercamp - heistercamp.co.uk - £39

We've featured Devon firm Heistercamp before for their excellent bags and the same quality and style is evident also in their belts. Hand-made to order in Devon, Heistercamp allow the purchaser to choose from a variety of colours and buckles, inviting the consumer enthusiastically to stamp their individuality. The combination pictured pictured below would be my choice, black with antique brass. It's an understated piece, yet oozes British class and quality. The great brass compliments the leather exquisitely; a belt to be applauded for it's attention to detail. As will you be for wearing it. Trust me.

heistercamp.co.uk

Worcester Bridle Leather Belt - The Worcestershire Leather Company - worcestershireleathercompany.com - £60

The Worcester Leather Company offer an excellent range of leather goods and their belts are first class. The Bridle Belt is no exception. Available in a selection of colours the Bridle Belt is a splendid choice for that deep brown (Australian Nut) belt that should be in the drawers of any gentlemen. The belt is simple and made with precision, a wonderful brown shade that provides genuine versatility. Pair the Bridle Leather Belt with almost anything.

theworcestershireleathercompany.com

Bradgate Leather Belt, Oxblood - The British Belt Company - thebritishbeltcompany.co.uk - £55

The British Shoe Company pride themselves on British fashion, making fine leather since 1946. The finely named Oxblood is a prime example of attention to detail, a deep red belt that makes a statement whatever you wear it with. Simplicity and quality are what's important. I would be tempted to wear this great blended red with dark blue although black would also work a treat. An outstanding belt from a British leather institution.

50 Words On... Thief

A reboot of a classic series, Thief landed on the latest gen to much excitement, sadly it was mostly misplaced. Clunky mechanics and an uninspiring story combine with the dreadful map and repetitive scenery to create a game worth skipping. With new games landing at the end of Q1, FWO says save your pennies for something special 4/10

British Essentials For A Mid-Week Break

Any gentleman should from time to time take it upon themselves to have a crafty break, mid-week. Take a days holiday and go away for the night, either treat your partner or go with the lads. You deserve it. With you now thoroughly convinced let's get you kitted out with some superb British essentials for your trip.

The Charlie Noble - Charlie Noble - charlienoble.co.uk - £300

There comes a point in a man's life when he should own a genuinely stylish overnight bag. This is one of the finest. A perfect shape and size for a mid-week jaunt, the bag comes in three great colours. My choice would be the saddle brown and blue piping, effortless class. It's sturdy, well designed, made from Scottish leather and stitched in London, a very British bag indeed. Tough enough to withstand a heavy overnighter with the boys and good looking enough for the finest hotels with your partner.

Milton Passport Holder - Tanner and Oak - tannerandoak.com - £35

Should your mid week adventure take you abroad then a superb Tanner and Oak passport holder in red is a perfect accompaniment to your passport. Again we've picked some top British made leather here and for the quality that entails, with a great deep red colour, £35 is a remarkably cheap price. Tanner and Oak pride themselves on British design and the Milton oozes understated and confident style. For gentlemen with attention to detail and a subtle determination to fly the British fashion flag wherever their passport may take them.

Ruskin Grandad Navy - Oliver Spencer - oliverspencer.co.uk - £85

A short break requires some forward planning and versatility in your packing. This great Grandad shirt from exceptional British designer Oliver Spencer fits the bill and you'd look right at home wearing this either at breakfast or in the bars in the evening. Smart, great colour and lightweight makes this a must pick for a short break. The Ruskin would look great both under a jacket but can easily hold it's own with jeans.

Shoe of the Day - John White's Westbury Berry Suede

The Westbury Berry Suede from John White would be a Spring / Summer essential for any well dressed chap about town. The top British design and colour are what makes these such a top pick, the deep red suede goes perfectly with the well cut chukka shaped boot. Hand stitching finishes the shoe off and things are kept simple and defined. I's be tempted to pair with dark chinos, corduroys or perhaps jeans to show off that deep berry colour. Available at johnwhiteshoes.com and priced at a very reasonable £140.

50 Words On....England v Denmark

With only a few opportunities left to impress before Roy has to name his squad for the World Cup, expect to see Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rodriguez, Henderson and Oxlade-Chamberlain given a decent run out in tonight's game. Normally dull affairs, this friendly could actually turn out to be entertaining. Denmark are tough opposition and should provide a decent test. Let's just hope the right players are given a chance and James Milner isn't in the starting line up...

Shoe of the Day - Jeffery West @ Schuh Brown Brogue

We've featured the superb Jeffery West before and they are easily some of the finest British shoe makers about. This time they join up with high street outfit Schuh to offer the superb Jeffery West design at an exceptional price.  These great brogues have some fine detailed design, clear contemporary lines and a smooth, polished deep brown that would be easily paired either with smart trousers or jeans. Aftershave of the Week - Bvlgari Aqva Amara

The Italian's are taking over the fragrance world this Spring, Rome based Bvlgari have teamed up with perfumer Jacques Cavallier to bring to you 'Aqva Amara' or 'Bitter Water'. It has a distinct Mediterranean flavour to it, as you would expect, containing accords of Sicilian mandarin and neroli flower. It's what we would consider a day time fragrance, it's aquatic base tones meet the citrus accords for a refreshing twist on the original 'Aqva'  release.

Shoe of the Day - Ask The Missus @ Office, Chatterbox Brogue

Ask the Missus is a collection of shoes exclusively at Office and they are certainly worth a gander. The Chatterbox Brogue is a smart shoe combining navy suede and two tone tan leather. The colours work well together and there's some great punched leather design, upping the contemporary feel of the shoe. I'd be inclined to wear these with some good navy jeans. Of course, being from a large high street brand, the shoes offer affordability which with the Chatterbox does not diminish the style. Available at office.co.uk and priced at just £69.

Monday 3 March 2014

Shoe of the Day - Dune Truant

So chaps, when it finally stops raining and the sun comes out it will, eventually, be safe again to wear suede. A must have casual shoe for spring. Pair with slate grey or red chinos and pretty much any jeans. Available at dunelondon.com and priced at £69.
